Leading national provider of diagnostic imaging and
therapeutic services looks to PaperWise for a solution
to billing process inefficiencies.
InSight Health Services Corp., a national provider of diagnostic imaging services, implemented the
PaperWise document management system to create efficiencies in its billing and claims process.
InSight is now able to start a claim virtually in real time through on-site scanning of documents
into its PaperWise system.
The document management solution allows them to avoid making copies, which had to be packaged and
sent to billing centers through FedEx or by courier. Because of medical billing regulations,
certain payor’s require InSight to be in possession of certain documents before a new claim can
be created. These may include assignment of benefits forms, physician prescriptions, and insurance
information.
Collection of these documents and distribution of them to its billing centers was a process that
was taking between 48 and 72 hours. With PaperWise, the process can be jump started to take
place within minutes.
Documents are scanned on-site using bar code indexing. The system pulls index information from
their proprietary system, then billing personnel can access the documents as soon as scanning
and indexing are complete.
“We are streamlining our back-office functions to stay competitive,” Norman Nie, Director of
Enterprise Process Improvement, says. According to Nie, with 250 users scanning an average of 120,000
documents into their system each month, the implementation of the PaperWise system has provided
immediate savings.
InSight implemented PaperWise at some 90 locations in 33 states around the U.S. Seeing the benefits
gained in the billing department, Nie says they are looking to expand the system to other internal
departments, as well as using it to archive support papers and invoices.
After completing implementation of the system in May 2006, InSight is looking to take advantage
of the custom workflow solutions provided by PaperWise. InSight’s initial goal was to reduce
photocopying, physical labor and delivery costs. Now it wants to move forward to using customized
workflows also offered by PaperWise.
